Patek Philippe was founded in 1839 in Geneva by Antoni Norbert Patek, a Polish entrepreneur, and Franciszek Czapek, a Czech-born Polish master watchmaker. In the beginning the company was called Patek, Czapek & Cie. The change of name to Patek Philippe & Cie came in 1851, a few years after Franciszek Czapek left the company and the author of the patent for winding and setting the watch directly using the crown, Jean Adrien Philippe, became chief watchmaker. From that moment the company boomed and Patek Philippe watches became favourite timepieces of crowned heads of state and the rich and powerful of the time.
